522 Franklin Street, Tin Front Building,
c. 1900, site

This building was clearly marked the “Leffler Building” on the 1910 and 1921 Sanborn Maps, with an office on the second floor and lodge on the third floor. In the 1950s it became the Singer Building, because the ground floor was a Singer sewing machine sales and service store; the upper floors were apartments. After a large fire in February 1981, the building was demolished and the site is now a parking lot. The extensive damage was because the fire ran quickly between original 12’ ceilings and the 8’ drop ceilings that had been installed. The fire wasn’t detected in time to save the building.
County Records
This lot is now combined in the 9,800 sq ft lot of the building at 518-520 Franklin Street.
