520 Lewis Street, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1964
Mt. Zion Church began humbly in 1915 in a building on Freedom Lane with a membership of seven to serve the historic community of Havre de Grace. This small congregation was led by Rev. Charles H. Johnson who assisted the group in separating from the First Colored Baptist Church of Havre de Grace. They incorporated and changed the name to Mt. Zion Baptist Church in 1918.
Several pastors led the worshippers until March 1936 when Rev. Milton C. Phillips became their pastor. A small building on Alliance Street (shown on the 1921 Sanborn Map) served as their original place of worship until they constructed the church building on the present site. The congregation marched to their brand new home here in April 1964.
Due to continued growth, an expansion was completed in 1987, extending the pulpit and choir loft, and also added offices. With an increasing membership, construction was completed on the Family Outreach Center in August 2000, the location of Sunday School classrooms, offices, a library, computer room and an auditorium.
Pastor James C. Williams Sr. joined Mt Zion Baptist Church in 1987 under the pastorate of the late Reverend Dr. Herman M. Williamson. He became an ordained Deacon in 1997 and Pastor Williams made history as Mt. Zion's seventh pastor on December 21, 2008. He lives in Havre de Grace with his wife and three children.
Mt. Zion Baptist Church celebrated the groundbreaking for its new church and educational center on November 17, 2018, at 226 Michael Lane, Aberdeen, Maryland. The church currently continues to have its primary facilities here.
