113 North Washington Street, c. 1900
This property has had several owners since George H. Baekey (1842-1909), a German immigrant, sold it in 1893 to Michael H. Fahey (1865-1940) and his wife, Mary. It is assumed that the Faheys built the current three-story building. Fahey family members were attorneys and real estate investors.
The first floor of the building is divided for two small stores. The south side used to be the very popular Music Box in the late 1940s. Glamour Beauty Salon operated on the left (north) side of the ground floor for many years. Anita Pizzano Higgins operated the Music Box while her sister, Dorothy Powell Duffield, ran the Glamour Beauty Salon. The upper floors, a large apartment, used to house Anita and Dorothy’s parents and family. Many young people of the 1970s remember gratefully that Anita Higgins would play the first few seconds of a record at the Music Box for them before they bought it. Sally Lieske Daigle feels that she and Lee Sirkis “drove the poor woman crazy asking her to play too many records.” Randall Lofland remembers his mother buying him the first record he ever owned—a 45—it was “Lady Madonna” by the Beatles. Rocci Fisch worked there after school and Danny Pascuzzi says he bought most of his 45 records there and still has them. They were $1 each. The Music Box closed in the late 1970s and this part of the first floor appears vacant.
Glamour Beauty Salon has been on the north side of the building for a few decades. When Dorothy Duffield could no longer run it due to illness, Charlotte Gibson took over the salon. However, this side of the first floor now also appears unused. Since 1984 this has been owned by William Bowman family members who deeded it to their company, Carsins Run Properties, LLC, in 2003.
