106-108 St. John Street, site
This property on the north side of the Old Ordinary was formerly owned by Joshua Green (1761-1840) who lived nearby at 140 St. John Street. In the distribution of Joshua Green’s estate in 1874, this property with its duplex building went to Elizabeth Green Frieze (Joshua’s daughter) who was married to Colonel J. Thompson Frieze (1826-1898). Their son, William “Willie” S. Frieze and his wife, Virginia, inherited this upon the death of the Colonel and sold it in 1903 to Sylvester Penning (1840-1929) and his wife, Alice. Penning was an attorney for the City Building and Loan Association.
The Pennings sold the property in 1918 Joseph H. and Olivia G. Durbin who owned the duplex for more than 40 years (most likely as an investment property). They also owned 118-120 St. John Street where it is believed they raised their family. In 1961 the property was bought by Cornelius and Helen Smith (along with 118-120 St. John Street), who were in the real estate business. They owned it until 1980 when they sold it to Norris O. Harris (1922-1984), whose parents were Robert and Mayfield Harris. Norris died just four years later and bequeathed it to his son, Joseph R. Harris.
The duplex and lot, along with 118-120 St. John Street, were sold by Joseph Harris in January 1992 to Nick G. Conits and Spiro G. Conits; shortly thereafter this duplex building burned down. The open lot is now owned by 106 St Johns Street, LLC, and is between the Old Ordinary and Taylor’s Barber Shop at 112 St. John Street.
