112 North Washington Street, c. late-19th century

Newmeyer’s Department Store began here in 1878 under the name “Blumenthal & Newmeyer,” but in 1896 they moved the store further north on Washington Street. In 1902 Solomon Newmeyer and his wife Hannah purchased Michael and Babette Blumenthal’s interest and became sole owners. In 1916, A.B. Boulden, an optometrist, had an office and telephone service here.
Elisa and Evaristo Bucchi bought this building in 1929 and ran a shoe shop here for many years. In a photo, the Bucchi Shoe Shop is seen around 1941.
After Evaristo Bucchi died in 1956, the business became Willie’s Barber Shop. In May 14, 1960, it was the home of the local Democratic Club and was visited by Senator John F. Kennedy on a campaign trip. He also was received at City Hall on Union Avenue and received a key to the City from then Mayor Walter McLhinney. The widowed Elisa Bucchi sold the building in 1965 to Roberts Builders. Several other owners followed, including Glen and Constance Higgins, Jerry and Margaret Stidman, Raymond and Carol Johnson, and Robert and Judy Smith.
In 2014, Bronwyn L. Martin bought and renovated the building and it is now Martin’s Financial Consulting Group, of Ameriprise.
