706 - 708 Fountain Street, c. 1890

This was the location of one of five nearly identical red-brick double houses on the south side of Fountain Street built around 1890 in a vernacular Italianate style. Known as “Brick Row,” they were originally intended to provide housing for workers in the factories and mills operating at 701 Fountain Street. The houses first appeared on the 1894 Sanborn Insurance Map. The duplex closest to Juniata Street was demolished several years ago for a parking lot and the easternmost duplex at the corner of Adams Street was demolished in 1997. The remaining three duplexes are 706-708, 716-718, and 726-728 Fountain Street.
The five duplexes were sold in 1904 by the The Havre de Grace Improvement Company to Robert G. Gambrill, President of Gambrill & Melville Mills, of 701 Fountain Street. Robert Gambrill later sold each one of the houses separately. He sold these two homes to Michael H. Fahey, a local attorney in 1906, who promptly sold them.
The easternmost side of this duplex (#706) was owned for several years by some members of the Santmyer and McMullen families who owned #702 above. In 1996 Robert E. Santmyer, Sr. sold #706 to Christopher and Kasey Davis. This later went to 706 Fountain St Corporation from 1999 to 2010, after which William E. Putland sold it to Gary M. and Rachel Orbitz in 2011. They continue to make their home in #706.
The western side of this double home (#708) was owned by Mary E. Tulley (1871-1948) from 1922 to 1943. From 1943 to 1984 it was owned by Murray V. Lawder (1891-1970) and R. May Lawder, most likely as a real estate investment because they owned several other properties. In 2016 this was bought by Rachel Gill and Leonard and Marilyn Ciufo who undertook a major renovation of this house. They installed central air-conditioning, updated the kitchen with a spacious island and butcher block countertops, and created a master bedroom with a balcony and large closets. In 2018, Rachel Gill and Leonard and Marilyn Ciufo sold this home to Domenick R. Bolen who makes his home here.
