112-114 Market Street, site
One lot of this property was the location of the three-story rooming house, “Huggins House” in the 1860s, operated by Thomas Young and purchased by him in 1869. In 1871 he charged 75 cents per day for one of the 22 rooms. Thomas Young died in 1882 having had six children with his wife, Ellen. The following year, Ellen married Thomas Reddington when Reddington took over running the “Susquehanna Hotel” as it became commonly known. In 1883, Thomas Reddington got in a fist fight with “Coon” Murray after which Thomas shot Coon in the head. Coon was taken to his home and while Thomas fled initially he died in jail in 1886.
Ellen Reddington (1837-1901) continued operating the “Susquehanna House” and in 1893 court trustees sold it to her. In 1897, however, Ellen Reddington sold the “Susquehanna Hotel” to Elizabeth J. Davis, her daughter (per the same deed that transferred Reddington’s ownership of the Old Ordinary on St. John Street to Davis). Note also that a “Susquehanna Inn” existed around this time at 303 South Washington Street.
Four years later, Elizabeth Davis sold this property. From 1901 until 1942, the former Susquehanna Hotel was home to Maryland Home Lodge #2160, Grand United Order of Odd Fellows. After they sold it, the property passed through a few owners during which the two-story building was demolished. The empty lot was bought by Ellsworth and Madelyn Shank in 1984 who sold it to the current owner, Allen J. Fair.
The second lot of this now unimproved land, also fronting on Market Street and running back to Strawberry Lane, was bought by Robert O. Mitchell (1858-1901), Sheriff of Harford County, just before 1899. It passed down through his three children to J. Carville Maslin and Ella Maslin and then Ellsworth and Madelyn Shank in 1965. The Shanks also sold this open lot to Allen Fair in 1984.
Allen Fair has kindly permitted the Havre de Grace Green Team to use this land as one of their community gardens for several years.
