700 Market Street, c. 1892; rebuilt 2020

This two-story typical frame Havre de Grace home appears on the 1899 Sanborn Insurance Map, so in this case it appears that Harford County’s “built date” of 1892 may be accurate. In 1936, the Estate of Eda B. Cole Ambrose (1877-1936) conveyed this property to Aileen Cole (later Aileen Cole Barclay), her granddaughter. The house sat on a large lot at the southwest corner of Alliance and Market Streets, a very historical area of the city that used to house many decoy carvers. Nearby is the Moore Family Homestead dating to 1847, the Currier House of 1790, the landmark Bayou Hotel of 1917, the Jacksteit House of 1856, and many others previously owned by decoy carvers.
In 1942, Aileen Cole Barclay sold this property to John R. and Eva Blanche Ledman who together owned the home for more than 75 years. Although John Ledman died in 1992, Eva continued to own the property until she died at the age of 95 in 2018. She left a son, Daniel Ledman and his wife Sherry living in Havre de Grace and five great-grandchildren. Daniel, as her personal representative, sold this home in 2018 to Michael Delaney of North Carolina.
By mid-2019 much of the original house had been demolished—and a year later a larger house has been built around the remains of the old house and is owned by Michael Delaney.
