201 South Union Avenue, c. 1961

A home that previously stood on this lot many years ago facing Bourbon Street was sold by Walter Farnandis, a War of 1812 veteran, in 1853 to John Blaney (1791-1866) and his wife, Rebecca Blaney. John Blaney is known in Havre de Grace for having been the third Concord Point Lighthouse Keeper from 1841 to 1844, after John O’Neill and Thomas Courtney. Blaney served again as Keeper from 1849 to 1853, which could indicate why he needed a new place to live in 1853.
John Blaney and his wife had also built the home next door at 205 South Union Avenue in the early 1850s and in 1856 they sold that to their daughter, Louisa Blaney Kenly. Most likely back then both of these homes were on the same parcel of land. After John Blaney died intestate this property descended to Francillia Bond (his daughter) who also died intestate in 1923, when the property descended through Clinton Leslie Bond, Dora Bond, Frank Steven Bond, and other Bond family members.
In 1959, Dr. Martin A. Grossbart bought the building referenced above, which had the address of 466-468 Bourbon Street. Wanting a newer building designed as professional offices, he had a one-story professional office designed by architect, Poldi Hirsch (1926-1987), who had designed other buildings in town. In 1961 Dr. Grossbart opened his dentistry office in the brand new building here. Dr. Grossbart and his wife, Gloria, owned the building until 1986 when they sold it to Dr. Stuart L. Eisman. Dr. Eisman modified the building so that the entrance was moved from Bourbon Street to Union Avenue and it acquired the Union Avenue address.
Dr. Eisman operated his own dental office here from 1986 until 2007, when once more the building was sold as a dental office. That’s when Dr. Herbert B. Friedman opened the Union Dental Center and later was joined by his son, Dr. Brett Friedman in the practice. Dr. Herbert Friedman has since retired and the Dental Center building is now owned and operated by Dr. Brett Friedman and his associates.
