121 North Stokes Street, c. 1891; renovated 2017

It is estimated that this house was built prior to 1891 when James W. Foster and his wife sold it to William C. Pennington (1860-1920), of the Pennington Funeral Home family. William was the son of Joseph A. Pennington (who had gone west during the Gold Rush era but returned to Havre de Grace to take over the family business). Another member of that family was George T. Pennington who became Mayor of Havre de Grace from 1923-1936, and for whom the former St. Clair Street was renamed as Pennington Avenue in 1961. William C. Pennington sold this home in 1897 to Elizabeth Moseman Leffler (1849-1932) and her husband Albert Leffler where they raised six children over the next 42 years.
Stanley M. Barrett (1892-1966) was also living in this home when he was inducted into the US Army in May 1918 as a Private. He served in the 9th BN 154th Depot Brigade Infantry and was overseas from July 1918 to May 1919. He served in the Avocourt Sector, Meuse Argonne, and in the Troyon Sector. He was honorably discharged on June 7, 1919, and returned to Havre de Grace where he is listed on the Roll of Honor at Tydings Park.
The same Stanley Barrett purchased this home from the Lefflers in 1941 with his wife, Elizabeth, and the house stayed in the Barrett family until 1979. Stanley Barrett was a Director of the Havre de Grace Chamber of Commerce in 1943 and by 1947 had become President of the Havre de Grace Printing and Publishing Company. That same year, he oversaw the sale of the Abraham Jarrett Thomas House (or Lafayette Hotel) from his company to the Joseph L. Davis Post No.47 American Legion of Havre de Grace on St. John Street.
Stanley Barrett died in 1966 and a family member sold the house in 1979 to Barbara Ann Boyd who worked for many years at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. In 2016 the house was purchased by LGMD Properties LLC who completely renovated both the inside and outside of the house. The property was purchased by Philip J. McKee in 2018.
