414 Congress Avenue, Jackson - Silverstein House, c. 1865
Stop #21 on The Lafayette Trail
From 1898 until 1912, this house belonged to Walter T. Jackson (1860-1938) and his wife, Nellie—they lost it in a 1912 decision of a Circuit Court Trustee. Walter Jackson was a fish and game warden and very successful duck gunner. In the late 1890s he was known as a “best shot” of the Havre de Grace Gun Club and competed very well in pigeon shooting competitions. He was active in several organizations including the Democratic Campaign Club, the Grace Reformed Episcopal Church, and was appointed to the Board of Directors of Citizens National Bank in the 1920s.
The Circuit Court Trustee sold the home to Ambrose B. Cobourn (1862-1939) and his wife, Carrie, who lived here from 1912 until 1941. They had one son, George Hiram Cobourn (1888-1935), who became a banker and director of the Columbian Building Association. Ambrose died in 1939 and Carrie Cobourn sold the house in 1941 to Omer Carson, a local attorney and real estate investor. In 1943 the home was bought by Harry Vantor (1892-1967) and his wife, Helen. Both of these sales, however, may have been investments—the Vantors sold the home one year later.
In 1944 this was bought by Joseph D. Silverstein (1909-1981) who had moved with his family to Havre de Grace and was operating Joseph’s Department Store. It is the only structure of this style in Havre de Grace and was certainly the “finest house” built in town during the middle period (1850-1880). It is now owned by Louis Silverstein, the brother of Eli Silverstein, who also operated their father’s Joseph’s Department Store for many years until to 2014. When Eli retired then, Louis and his wife took over running the store.
Although the original porch on the east side of the house was removed (a faint outline of it remains on the brickwork), Louis’s wife says they plan to replace the porch at some point in the future. Louis and his wife Christy continue to own this home. This property received an award from the Havre de Grace Historic Preservation Commission in 2007.
