107-109 North Washington Street, c. 1890

In the 1930s, this property was owned by the Del-Mar-Va Mortgage Company who sold it in 1938 to Omer and Catharine Carson (parents of local attorney Robert Carson). The Carsons owned several properties in Havre de Grace over the years. From the 1970s to 2002 it was owned by members of the Ball family, including Burcham Ball and Frankie and Kathy Ball. It is now owned by 107 North Washington Street, LLC.
#107: In a 1916 telephone directory, Walter F. Holloway (1877-1944) is listed as having a bakery and confectionery store here.
In the 1930-1940s, Hardy and Erma McSpadden ran City Tailors here on the first floor—and they used to clean and press the uniforms of city police officers free of charge. City Tailors provided tailoring, cleaning, and pressing all done by local young men, including John Grubb, Pee Wee Keys, Whitey Turner, and Hardy “Mack” McSpadden. Later, Mack opened McSpadden Cleaners on Pennington Avenue at the corner of North Washington Street. After that, the LaFerne Beauty Shoppe was here, followed in 1971 by a Shoe Shine Stand. The store became Main Street Cigar in 2011; and in 2015 it became the Rhapsody Hair Salon, which closed in 2019. In 2020 a new barbershop opened here named 5 Star Studio, with Tito Fernandez and Abdian.
#109: In the 1970s, the first floor was a Christian Science Reading Room. In 2005-2006 it was the China Wok; later it was Kairi Lele, a Caribbean restaurant; followed by a Mexican restaurant—the El Jalapeno for a short time; and then closed. In late 2018, George Mullin opened “George’s Original Chicken” carry-out restaurant here to the delight of many who remember their business from the 1980s. That, however, also closed and this is now a Mexican restaurant named Bocamexa Taqueira that opens on weekends.
