806 South Union Avenue, c. 1932

This lot is part of a 1¼-acre parcel of land on the west side of South Union Avenue that was owned by Sarah Hale in the early 19th century who bequeathed it to her granddaughter, Sarah Ann Brooke (1807-1890) and her husband, James W. Brooke (1798-1870). The Brookes sold it in 1843 to William F. Bayless (1814-1873). Upon the death of William, he bequeathed the land to his son, Samuel Martin Bayless (1847-1923).
In 1900, Samuel Bayless sold the land to local banker and investor, A. Hamlin Carver (1857-1943). The widowed Carver, who lived elsewhere in town, sold this Lot 465 in 1932 to Edward J. Stummets (1885-1971) and Jeannette Stummets (1905-1977), his wife. Deeds unfortunately do not indicate whether a house existed on this lot when Carver sold it in 1932. However, because this is one of three similar traditional American foursquare-style brick homes built in a row, and Carver was a banker and investor, it seems possible that the three houses were constructed by Carver prior to selling each of them.
This single family home was sold by the Stummets in 1951 when they retired to Florida. The new owner was James P. Ross who sold the house six years later to Emil and Helen Rochet. Emil Rochet also ran his Emil Rochet Metropolitan Life Insurance Company office from here. In 1982 the Rochets sold the property to Drs. Linda R. Braterman and Nora J. Cervanka. They were physicians specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. The following year, Dr. Braterman had the property rezoned and added a large addition to the rear to accommodate their medical practice. The doctors were also known for having built a large contemporary-style home on the water at Concord Street in 1976, where they lived until 1995 (and was later bought and demolished by the city).
In 2001, Drs. Braterman and Cervanka sold this property to Upper Bay Counseling and Support Services who maintained their offices here until 2008. After a couple of other tenants, this property was purchased in 2015 by Kimberly A. Bromley, who transitioned the house and large addition into a 10-bed assisted living facility for elderly residents called “Always in Grace Assisted Living.” This assisted living home, with a large parking lot in the rear, was opened for the 2018 Annual Candlelight Tour.
