607 South Union Avenue, c. 1952

This property was sold by John Welsh, a widower, in 1923 to Anna H. Mitchell in 1923. John Welsh was well known as City Bailiff (Police Chief) from 1892 to 1907 and again from 1910 to 1911. He later worked at The Graw Racetrack as a watchman. Anna Mitchell (1893-1961) was the widow of Walter F. Mitchell (1869-1944) and they had acquired several nearby properties from Annie E. Seneca (of Seneca Cannery), who was Walter Mitchell’s aunt. It is not known whether a building stood here then but it is likely because there was an older house next door at 601 South Union Avenue at that time.
In 1952, Anna Mitchell sold this property to Dr. Richard B. Norment III and Marjorie J. Norment. It is thought that the Norments may have built this red brick building as their gynecologist- obstetrician office shortly after acquiring the property. The Norments sold this property to Dr. Charles B. Marek (1911-2002), another physician in 1954. Dr. Norment headed the gynecology department of Harford Memorial Hospital from 1940 into the 1960s. He later practiced with Dr. Frederick Hatem at another Union Avenue address. This was the beginning of this building being used for several years by groups of physicians who had their medical practices here.
Dr. Charles Marek established a 20-year family Trust in 1954 that stipulated his trustees should sell the property 20 years after that for the benefit of his children. The Trustees managed the property and distributed it in 1974 to Marie M. Jones, Gwendolyn M. Wells, and Charles B. Marek, Jr., as required by the trust. Charles Marek Jr. followed his father into medical practice. For the next 13 years, the building continued to be used as physician offices. In 1987, the Marek owners sold this property to Drs. John L. Carriere and Leopold J. Bellantoni to continue its use as their OB/GYN offices. Dr. Carriere also was a well respected obstetrician and gynecologist who served the citizens of Havre de Grace for more than 30 years before his death in 2010. He also served as President of the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum. Dr. Carriere and his wife, Gail, lived in a waterfront home at 510 Commerce Street that was built originally in 1931 by Senator Millard E. Tydings for his mother and father, Mary Bond O'Neill Tydings and her husband, Millard Fillmore Tydings. Dr. Bellantoni’s son, Jon J. Bellantoni, also became an OB/GYN practitioner in Havre de Grace.
Drs. Carriere and Bellantoni sold this property in 2002 to 109 Washington, LLC. It was used by them as an investment property until 2014 when foreclosure caused Substitute Trustees to sell it in 2014 to Novo Realty LLC, an assignee of Cecil Bank. The following year Novo Realty sold this property to David M. Saulsbury, presumably again as an investment property because this was not his principal residence. This large lot, much of which is in the rear of the building, was converted into a parking lot several years ago, presumably for the convenience of visiting patients.
In December 2021, David M. Saulsbury sold this property to Robert A. Bissell and Ruth Mary Bissell who are in the process of renovating it to their needs.
