319-321 South Washington Street, c.1907
The two halves of this lot were owned separately until 1907 when Mary V. Young (1872-1932), who already owned one half of the lot, bought the second half. She and her husband, Thomas J. Young (1866-1938) got a mortgage with the Home Building Association of Harford County and most likely built this home in 1907 as a double house. Mary Young’s heirs deeded the property to Thomas Young (their father) in 1932 when Mary died. He deeded it in 1932 to Helen Young (1905-1981) the couple’s daughter, reserving a life estate for himself. He died six years later and Helen Young married Daniel Gallagher (1886-1985).
It is not known when house numbered #319 (on the north side) was converted into two apartments, which has an exterior stairway to the second floor. But it would appear that it was converted some years ago, while the owners of the duplex lived in #321.
Daniel Gallagher owned 10 parcels of land and in 1947 added Helen’s name to those deeds. Together they sold this double house to Samuel Grimsey (1917-1988) and Doris Grimsey his wife. Samuel had been born and raised in Havre de Grace. Doris Grimsey was the sister of Elwood L. McCullough Jr., a WWII veteran and a retired Postmaster of Havre de Grace. After the Grimseys owned this property for almost 40 years, Samuel died and Doris Grimsey sold it that same year of 1988 to Richard J. and Nancy Mezan.
Richard Mezan is a real estate agent who lived elsewhere with his wife, Nancy, so this three-unit duplex is an investment property. The #319 side has two units and #321 is the main unit of 1,300 sq ft. After the 2018 death of Richard Mezan, his widow, Nancy Lee Mezan sold this property in July 2020 to Allen J. Fair, a local real estate investor.
