309-311 North Union Avenue, c. 1974
The land on which this was built used to be part of the property at 301 North Union Avenue. In 1958, the owner of that property divided the land into two parcels and David and Jean Newman built a “City Pharmacy” here the following year. Unfortunately, in 1973 the pharmacy had a large fire and as Buck Taylor said, it “burned down in 1973 like crazy.” He was there with many other onlookers. Tammy DiMauro Warner remembers helping the ladies auxiliary to make sandwiches for the firefighters!
The Newmans had originally built their pharmacy building here in 1959 after moving from at 324 North Union Avenue and they had to rebuild it in 1974 following the fire. In 1984, they sold this building to Dominic R. Gasdia, who continued to operate the City Pharmacy.
Steve Sheppard, as 309 North Union Avenue, LLC, purchased the building in 2000 and opened The Office Centre. After first modifications, he constructed a large addition to the rear of the building as well as a loading dock. Since then, Steve Sheppard has been running The Office Centre, with office supplies and furnishings, and printing.
