343 Green Street, c. 1980

This property was owned for many years by Dr. Larry E. Grace who was a practicing dentist in the building to the east, at 333 Green Street. It is now owned by the Larry E. Grace Revocable Trust.
From 1994 to 2001, this three-room unit was the home of the late Lucille G. Beards. A former dancer, who delighted in form, color, texture and rhythm, she was a lover of the arts. Her collages of everyday objects and memorabilia, many displayed in shadow boxes, reflected her vision for life. She stored labeled containers filled with materials for her artwork in the kitchen, from which there was a lovely view of the Susquehanna River.
The 90-year-old Lucille Beards, however, may be remembered the best from having chained herself in her wheelchair daily to a fence at the Concord Point Lighthouse in 1999 in protest against development of the adjacent parkland. The owners of that land had sought a permit to build a 150-seat restaurant next to the Lighthouse, which many felt was an important area in the history of the city. The permit was never granted and the owners sold the property to the City; it is now part of Concord Point Park.
This apartment with its view of the river has been the home of Ellie Mencer, a writer, for several years. She has been involved in many activities in the city and authored the Havre de Grace periodical, From Lockhouse to Lighthouse for more than a decade. After that she launched the free havredegrace Magazine, a print and online publication by which she keeps everyone up to date with everything happening in Havre de Grace. It is distributed without charge by local stores, businesses, and other public places.
