725 South Washington Street, c. 1860s
This property is at the southeast corner of the intersection of South Washington and Lafayette Streets. Records that could indicate an accurate “built date” could not be located but it is estimated that this house may date to around the 1860s. When the Maryland Historical Trust conducted the MIHP in 1977 of the house across the street at 726 South Washington Street (now demolished), they commented that “A house with a similar appearance is located directly across the street.” They also dated that house to have been built c.1850s.
In 1903 an ownership dispute about this home between Richard S. Stokes and Eliza Ross reached the Court and a Trustee was ordered to sell the property. It was bought by Sarah A. Mahan (1860-1938). In 1881, Sarah had married Charles Alfred Mahan and it is assumed that they made their home here. When Sarah died in 1938, she bequeathed the property to her husband, Charles. However, he only outlived her by four years and his Estate sold it to Allen G. and Nettie M. Walters in 1942. Nettie Walters died in 1959, followed by her husband, Allen, in 1969.
Although there was no change in the deed, it is known that Stephen K. Adams (1922-2004) and his wife, Natalie, lived in this home in 1972 and for many more years. Stephen worked for the A&P Tea Company in Havre de Grace and Aberdeen for 30 years. It was not until 2005 that the Estate of Stephen K. Adams showed that he was the surviving heir of Allen G. Waters, and the Estate sold this home to Janice L. and Richard G. Wheeler. The Bank of New York Mellon, however, sold the home in 2014 to Dennis E. Comrey, Jr. and Melisa A. Bailey, who continue to own this historical home. Although a large tree was blown onto the front of the house during a 2022 storm, damage to the house was minimal.
