104-110 North Washington Street, c.1885

This historic building includes two commercial spaces on the ground floor and apartments on the second and third floors. Each of the occupants identifies their locations with numbers between #104 (on the south side) and #110 (on the north side).
#104: Jacob Jerome Hergenrother was born in Havre de Grace in 1890 and lived at 104 North Washington Street when he was inducted for WWI in 1918. He served as a Private in the 16th Battalion 154th Depot Brigade and in Company D 304th Engineers. Overseas from July 1918 to May 1919, he was wounded in October 1918 before returning to Havre de Grace. He was the brother of George H. Hergenrother who was appointed as Postmaster by President Roosevelt in 1940.
Around 1900, this first floor housed the M.J. Kelly Clothing Store and years later Albert L. Gerard operated a plumbing and heating business here. Connie Farro Richardson recalls living in an apartment above Gerard’s shop when she was young. For many years later this property was a State Farm Insurance sales office with Arthur F. Vicari, then Audrey M. Morse, and in May 2018 a new State Farm agent, Mike Kates, located here.
Alfred J. “Al” Marini and his wife, Giovanna Bucchi “Janie” Marini, operated Al’s Firestone Dealer Store on the ground level from the 1940s-1960s where they sold tires and tubes, radios, and many other items. And they often bid against Tawney’s Garage on new tires for the City’s police vehicles. Larry Sampson appreciates that it was Al Marini who first permitted him to buy a small stereo system on credit and make payments on it. Al and Janie Marini lived in a two-story apartment above the store. Janie Marini was the daughter of Evaristo and Elisa Bucchi who ran a shoe shop at 112 North Washington Street for many years.
#110: In 1903, this was a bakery, run by G.L. Parks but after a fire in 1904 Parks expanded his products to include a variety of confections and he also lived in the building. Later, the bakery was rented to Eugene Goll (1908-1985) and his wife, Elsa Goll (1908-1993). They both grew up in Stuttgart Germany, and had worked in family bakeries since childhood. In 1930, they immigrated to Philadelphia, married, and came to Havre de Grace on their honeymoon—and never left. They opened a bakery in this building but 10 years later purchased 234 North Washington Street so they could live in an apartment above their store.
In the mid-1940s, this was the location of Warner’s Stationery Store, where they sold typewriters, carbon paper, tobacco, magazines, and other items. However, in 1947 the business was bought by George W. Lutz who changed the name to the Harford Stationery Store.
In 1976, former Mayor Wayne Dougherty and his wife, Mary (who is Al and Janie Marini’s daughter) began operating the A & J Travel Agency here. They later relocated to Market Street. Since 1988, it has been Karen’s Natural Market, a family-owned business run by Karen Dix who says she has “the best selection of natural and organic products that can be found anywhere on Earth.”
