700 South Washington Street, c. 1961

Five lots of land beginning at the southwest corner of South Washington and Alliance Streets were owned by Murray Vandiver, William R. Young, Henrietta Galloway, and William Frieze from 1868 until 1898 when Solomon Mitchell (1843-1921) bought them. The land stretched from that corner south to Samuel Barnes’s property on the west side of 712 South Washington Street. The lots, with a corner house, were sold by Solomon Mitchell and Anna Mitchell in 1903 to Alexander Dugan (1855-1944) and Sarah Dugan (1850-1927), who had immigrated from Ireland. The Dugans had two daughters, Elizabeth Dugan (1884-1945) and Aeney Dugan (1888-1959). Elizabeth married Albert S. Weyraugh (1885-1945) and Aeney moved to Oklahoma where she married Robert W. Skipper and had a child whom they named Albert Dugan Skipper around 1922. After divorcing Robert, Aeney returned to this home (after her mother’s death) around 1931 and lived here with her father, Alexander Dugan, and her son Albert D. Skipper.
In August 1941 Alexander Dugan sold these five lots of land and house to his daughter, Elizabeth Weyraugh. Just three months later, however, Elizabeth sold this property to her sister, Aeney Skipper. Aeney and her son, Albert Skipper, continued to live in this home while Alexander Dugan lived with Elizabeth in Virginia until his death in 1944. In 1956, Aeney Skipper divided the lots and sold the southern part of land to Samuel G. Barnes (1902-1964) and Ruth Ann Barnes. They built the current ranch-style one-story brick home that is now 708 South Washington Street.
After Aeney’s death, her son Albert Skipper inherited the property and sold this corner lot and house in June 1959 to Joseph “Dale” Hansell (1922-1997) and Theresa Hansell (1922-2017). Dale had served in the Army during WWII. It is likely that the Hansells demolished the original house and built this ranch-style home soon after buying the property. The Hansells sold the house in 1967 to Francis J. Angert (1901-1997) and Naomi Angert (1922-2010) who owned this house for the next twelve years. They were of the Angert family that began “Frank’s Shoe Stores” on North Washington Street and other locations. One of their two sons was the late Donald Angert, who married Louise Foley Angert and was instrumental in growing the Angert shoe business over several decades.
In 1979, Francis and Naomi Angert sold this home to James A. “Sonny” Walker (1929-2002) and Dorothy “Dottie” Lee Walker (1931-2018), brother and sister. Their parents were James L. “Jinx” Walker (1907-1983) and Eva Mae Walker. Sonny Walker had served in the US Army in Korea. Dottie Walker died in 2018, after a long career at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. In 2019 a large fence was built around the Alliance Street perimeter and cut firewood is stacked along the fence so it appears that there is now someone living in and maintaining this home. Dorothy Walker’s name, however, is still listed on Harford County Records as the owner of this home.
