123 South Lodge Lane, Lambert’s Alley House, c. 1840s; restored 1976
Harford County does not list this Lodge Lane house independently. The house lies directly behind the house and grounds of the Gorsuch family at 123 South Union Avenue. Harford County records show the Gorsuch property contains a lot of 12,000 square feet and a detached garage. It is known historically that lots in the city used to be very large and often had carriage houses/garages or other outbuildings; many of those buildings have become separate homes (usually rental) but remain on the County records as part of the property of the main house. Therefore, no separate deeds exist for such buildings. The home, however, has sometimes been referred to as the Rene Lambert tenant house (Rene and Mary Lambert lived at 115 South Union Avenue).
In 1978, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lovelace took up residence here, after the two-family dwelling had been converted for single family living. Both stairways remained as an unusual feature for visitors on the 1978 Annual Candlelight Tour.
In 1997, this house with its blue exterior was the home of Thomas W. Burns, Jr. and Greg Duff who also invited the Annual Candlelight Tour to their home. Retaining the flavor of its 1840s origin, the first floor dining room featured exposed beams, a woodstove, and a large wood fireplace façade, along with the original yellow pine board flooring throughout the house. The compact living room contained another fireplace façade while exposed beams enhanced the small kitchen. The house’s dual staircases in the single home were unusual—at the entrance foyer one staircase led to the second floor bedrooms, office, and bathroom and the other led up from the living room.
