214 South Washington Street, c. 1936
The land on which this Colonial home sits was sold by Platt Whitaker in 1833 to Thomas Sadler, Sr., who upon his death in 1888 bequeathed the property through others until it descended to John E. Green. John was the husband of Thomas Sadler’s granddaughter, Mary Kate Fields Green. Upon John Green’s death in 1936, his Estate sold the property to Frank S. Maslin, Jr. (1908-1994) and his wife, Elsie Maslin, who most likely built the existing home here. Frank Maslin was a Havre de Grace High School graduate and a banker with the Maryland National Bank while Elsie Charshee Maslin was a member of a well-known local family. The Maslins owned other properties in town.
In 1949, the Maslins sold this house to Dr. James L. Trone, Jr., who was a local dentist, and his wife, Margaret V. Trone. Sometime after the early death of his wife in 1957, Dr. Trone married Margaret C. Trone and they made their home here. Dr. Trone had practiced dentistry with a partner, Dr. Robert Carr, in their medical offices across the street from this home (213 South Washington Street). Dr. Trone died in 1982 and Margaret Trone continued to own the home until selling it in 2018 to the current owner, Audrey A. McCann.
It is assumed that this property was a single family home originally but some major changes have been made both to the house as well as the building behind it. In older Havre de Grace homes such as this, there usually was an outbuilding, often used as a stable or carriage house. Many of these outbuildings have been converted into livable spaces over the years. This property now has a “tenant house” behind the main house, which could have been such an original outbuilding. In addition, this house now has separately keyed apartments on each floor. This lends itself to an owner living in one of the units and renting the others.
Audrey A. McCann continues to own this property and is believed to live in one of the units.
