409 North Union Avenue, c. 1900
This property is now combined in Harford County Records with 401 North Union Avenue. A previous business here on the ground floor was T.C. Cleaners. Prior to that, it was the L & H Cleaners run by Andrew (Bud) Lucot and Edward Hutchins for about 30 years. Bud was very civic minded and many remember that he closed the shop for a week in the 1960s so that he could march with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This building was constructed as an addition to the A.P. McCombs Building beside it at 401 North Union Avenue.
Before the L & H Cleaners, there was a small lunch room/carryout there (around the 1950s) that had a Hershey’s Ice Cream sign hanging outside. It may have been named The Goodie Shop. Larry Chatham remembers that the lady there, Helen, made great burgers. But Stan Rodia remembers that for a nickel he could get a Fudgsicle or a Dreamsicle, or even a push-up “Rocket.” The Fudgsicles were so sticky that the wrapper stuck to them. Sugar rock candy on a string was another favorite of his.
And in 1931, the Consolidated Gas & Electric Light & Power Company of Baltimore was located here. There are apartments now above the Cleaners; Gladys Stone lived in one of them from 1986 until 1992.
This is now the location of Bearwood Designs with Mike Lust, who creates one-of-a-kind pieces with repurposed and salvaged items. Mike’s wife, Renee creates jewelry.
