659 Green Street, c. 1915
The lot for this house was sold in 1889 by John Warner to Naomi Baldwin (1843-1926), whose husband, William Baldwin, had died in 1881. It appears that she constructed this Victorian frame house sometime before 1915, when she sold the house to Albert B. and Emma B. Lake. They lived here for about two years before they sold the house to Emma Bristow (1862-1955) and her husband, Harvey.
In 1922, Charles “Prince” Bonney (1891-1975), having served in the Army in WWI, purchased the home and lived here with his mother (Nellie Starr Bonney), his nephew (Maurice Harold Bonney, Jr.), and his niece (Emily Bonney). Prince Bonney, as Charles liked to be known, lived in this house for the remainder of his life, a span of more than 50 years. He may at times have invested in real estate because, in 1945, Louis and Myra Good sold the large Parker Mitchell House (a rooming house) at 518-520 Franklin Street to Prince Bonney. He held that until 1952 when he sold it. Other than that, Prince Bonney was a poet who loved Havre de Grace—he wrote a poem to show his love. Prince Bonney’s brother, Maurice “Harold” Bonney, Sr. lived at 316 South Washington Street with his wife, Anna, from 1939 to 1971, and served on the City Council in the 1950s.
Prince Bonney’s nephew, Maurice H. Bonney, Jr. (1924-2006) had graduated from the Julliard School in New York City and become a very successful orchestra conductor. Maurice had served in during WWII, as a musician first class with the Navy orchestra. When Maurice died in 2006, he had “The Maestro” engraved on his grave plaque in Mesa, Arizona.
After Prince Bonney died in 1975, this house was bought by Robert T. and Linda K. Wilson and a couple of years later Gary J. Fitz owned it. Gary owned it for about 17 years after which there were a few more owners. In 2018, the home got a new roof, an upgraded kitchen and bath, replacement windows, and other renovations and was bought by Suzanne Greenley, who is the current owner. Suzanne received a 25-year employee Service Award from the nearby APG Federal Credit Union in 2015.
