614 South Washington Street, Rohrbaugh-Hipple
House, c. 1870s

This property was most likely built by Captain Moses Galloway (1810-1881), a schooner captain, and his second wife, Henrietta Brown Galloway (1821-1907), around the 1870s (Moses had previously built 624 South Washington Street in 1840 with his first wife, Sarah Shipley Galloway). This double house appears on the Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of October 1899 (the first year for which the Sanborn Maps included this area of the city) so could have been built as early as the 1870s, as suggested by the Maryland Historical Trust. Captain Moses built and owned a schooner called the “Virginia Hawley” (107 tons) in Havre de Grace in 1871 (Blue Book of American Shipping: Marine and Naval, Vol.5, Issue 1.) Upon the death of Henrietta in 1907 her heirs sold this home to two of their siblings, Kate R. Galloway (1853-1935) and Rose B. Galloway (1859-1953). The house was designed as a duplex but deeds do not reflect separate owners for each side until 1946. During ownership by the sisters, this address was the home of William N. Foster in 1916, who had telephone service here.
The Monumental News, Vol. XII of 1900, reports that William N. Foster was under contract with the Admiral John Rodgers Post #28 GAR of Havre de Grace to create a large Quincy granite monument “surmounted by a polished ball.” William Foster completed that 10-foot monument, which was dedicated on July 4, 1900, in Angel Hill Cemetery to honor soldiers and sailors who fought in the Civil War. The solemn parade to the ceremony was led by veterans of the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. Hopefully, William Foster was also honored that day for creating a monument that still stands proudly today in the cemetery. In 1912, Mayor Walter Weber appointed William N. Foster as Superintendent of Streets.
Kate and Rose Galloway sold the home in 1926, with its 50-foot frontage on South Washington Street, to John Anderson Hipple (1864-1954) and his wife, Anna Louisa, who had moved here from Pennsylvania. The Hipples later divided the home into a duplex and in 1946 sold the north side (#612) to Christian “Chris” Lay (1875-1950) and his wife, Edith E. Lay, while the Hipples continued living in the south side (#614).
In 1964, the widowed Edith Lay deeded the #612 home to her son Van O’Neil Lay (1927-1977) and his wife, Doris Lay. The following year, the Lays sold it to Anylee Lloyd Walls and Shirley, his wife. They sold their northerly side to Vernon B. Rohrbaugh (1923-1984) and Edna Rohrbaugh in 1966. Vernon had served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and had 12 siblings. The Rohrbaughs lived here until 1983 when they sold it to William Price Hipple (1926-2003). He was the son of J. Price Hipple and his wife, Lillie B. Hipple.
Meanwhile, at #614, John Hipple’s wife, Anna, had died in 1948 so he sold that property to Wray R. Mott and Faye Mott the following year. They only lived here for about one year and in 1950 sold that southerly side to Gordon W. Hipple, who was the son of John A. and Anna Hipple. Gordon and his wife, Eleanor R. Hipple, lived here for several years and sold #614 in 1972 to William Price Hipple. This was the first time in many years that both sides of the duplex were owned by the same person.
William Price Hipple sold both sides of the property (fronting 50 feet on the street) in 1987 to James Lee and Rose Ann Burcham. Rev. James “Jim” Burcham served as Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Havre de Grace from 1979 to 1993. He then served at the First Baptist Church of Upper Marlboro from which he retired after 44 total years in ministry. Shortly after acquiring the property, the Burchams remodeled the northerly side and built a one-story addition in the rear complete with a basement.
The Burchams sold both sides of this duplex in 2001 to James “Kevin” Boyd who lives here with his wife, Sheila M. Boyd. Over time, they converted the former duplex with separate entrances to being a single family home with one entry door in 2019. Both sides are listed together now in Harford County records as a single home at 614 South Washington Street with a large lot in the rear.
