704 South Union Avenue, c.1932

John Welsh bought this land in 1889 along with that of 700 South Union Avenue, next door. He served as the City Bailiff from 1892 until 1907 and again from 1910 and 1911. He appears to have built the house next door soon after buying the land, and he lived there with his family until 1937 when he died.
In 1932, Welsh sold this portion of his land to Frederick H. Fox (1899-1977) and his wife, Dallas, and it is assumed that they built this house in 1932 (they were still living here at the time of the 1940 Census). During the 1940s, Frederick and Dallas Fox divorced and Frederick married Audrey Atkinson (1915-1999). Audrey was the daughter of Harry B. Atkinson and Emma Rae Atkinson who ran the grocery store at the corner of North Adams and Otsego Streets until around 1959. Upon the death of Frederick in 1977 the widowed Audrey sold this property to two anesthesiologists from Harford Memorial Hospital for their medical practice. After about eight years, Dr. Holcombe H. “Chuck” Hurt, Jr. (1928-2015) sold his interest in the property to Dr. Peter K. Kang who continued to own it until 1997.
Since then, this has been the home of Tom Fitzpatrick and his wife, Teresa Yost-Bennett, a local sculptor/artist. Tom served on the Harford County Board of Education and is proud to have had an active role in bringing a new Middle/High School to Havre de Grace. Construction is complete and it has opened for the 2020-2021 school year.
Teresa is known for her whimsical hand-made ceramics that are sold in local studios but some of her favorite work has been in bronze, such as the “Baby in the Hand,” that she created for the lobby of the Women’s Pavilion of Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore.
In 2009, Tom and Teresa opened their side-hall colonial home to the Annual Candlelight Tour. The home was decorated with an eclectic mix of artwork and artifacts from the couple’s travels. The dining room was set with 1914 Wedgewood china from Tom Fitzpatrick’s family. The blue cornucopias and the large blue glass piece were authentic Venetian glass purchased on the island of Murano. Across the back yard, and almost hidden in a cedar forest, is Teresa’s two-story studio, where she creates her artwork. Tom and Teresa continue to live in and own this home.
