601 South Union Avenue, c. 1966

There used to be a Sears Catalog Kit House on this site at the southwest corner of Lewis Street and South Union Avenue that was relocated in order to construct the present building in 1966. James Sirkis says he has a photo of the old house being moved down Union Avenue to its new location at 414 Lafayette Street. The property was owned by Walter F. and Anna H. Mitchell from 1922 to 1957. They had bought it from Annie E. Seneca (of Seneca Canning), who was Walter Mitchell’s aunt.
The present building on the same corner was designed by local architect Poldi Hirsch (1926-1987), who designed several buildings in Havre de Grace. Dr. Alvin L. Sirkis had her design it originally as the 10-room Hospital Center Motel, combined with four doctors’ offices and a surgical clinic. After Dr. Sirkis died in 1971, his wife, Fira Sirkis, sold the building to a group of physicians.
There was a pharmacy here in the 1960s, Hospital Center Pharmacy, facing Lewis Street that was run by Lewis R. Kemp, Jr. It later became the Apothecary Shoppe, which was open in the 1970s and 1980s. The Apothecary Shoppe also sold ice cream for 25 cents a cup, which Joe Ray enjoyed after delivering newspapers on Saturdays. Frank’s Pizza moved into the pharmacy space for a short time after that.
Since 1986 this has been owned by the Upper Chesapeake Health System and it now houses the Landmark Medical Group offices.
