216 South Washington Street, c. late 1800s
Thomas Sadler, Jr. (1834-1917) lived in a house on this lot with his wife before she died. Thomas was a druggist and well known for having opened Green’s Pharmacy on North Washington Street in the 1860s. When he died in 1917, he left the property to their three children, who sold it to Raymond Eugene Rimmey. It appears that Raymond and his wife, Bessie, lived here for more than 35 years, through the 1953 death of Bessie, and until Raymond died in 1954. He bequeathed the property to his son, William Rimmey and his wife, who lived in New Jersey.
The New Jersey Rimmeys sold it the following year (1955) to Havre de Grace locals, Thomas and Helen G. Borneman. Thomas was a local contractor and lived at 113 North Union Avenue. They sold it to their son and his wife, Stanley and Charlotte E. Borneman who owned it until Stanley died in 1971. Charlotte, who later married again and became Charlotte E. Putland, sold this property in 1975 to Michael and Nancy Schick.
From 1979 to 1983 this was the home of Eugene and Diane Weisheit. They spent the first two years of ownership doing a major renovation of this frame home. They opened their home to the 1980 Annual Candlelight Tour where visitors viewed some of the changes. They had divided a large dining room into two rooms and converted an upstairs porch into a child’s bedroom. They had used paneling extensively and used wallpaper in several rooms including the hall. The second floor was noteworthy for the use of chestnut in the furnishings. Ample bookshelves indicated the owners’ interest in good books.
The Weisheits sold the home in 1983 to John Charles Kilbride, Jr. and June M. Kilbride. In 1985, Robert William Murphy bought this house from the Veterans Administration and nine years later he added Maria M. Murphy’s name to the deed. In that deed, Robert Murphy acknowledged that the conveyance was between husband and wife. Since 1994 this house has appeared to be empty, without anyone living in it.
