552 Green Street, c. 1879

Former Bailiff William R. Young (1826-1909) deeded “with love and affection” this property and several parcels of ground to his wife, Esther B. Young, in 1879 as he was “sojourning for a while” in Tennessee. He also deeded his rights to his fish-packing house and ice house on the town wharf near the old railroad depot as well as all the apparatus and fixtures to her. And he also got $2,000 in 1879 from Esther.
In 1909 an ownership dispute arose that was initiated by William W. Young that went to the Circuit Court. Trustees sold it to Robert R. Pennington who owned this house for the next 40 years. He was a member of the Pennington Funeral Home family and the brother of George T. Pennington for whom St. Clair Street was renamed Pennington Avenue. After the death of Robert Pennington in 1949, his estate sold the home to Walter McLhinney (1896-1977) and his wife Eleanor for them and their four children. They were well known for having opened the very popular McLhinney’s News Depot on North Washington Street. And Walter McLhinney soon after that was elected as Mayor of Havre de Grace from 1951 to 1957 and again from 1959 to 1961.
After the passing of Walter and Eleanor, this house stayed in the family. It was owned by their children, John "Jackie Mac" McLhinney, Charles and Mary McLhinney, and Eleanor McLhinney Ferguson and Leonard Ferguson. In 2005, the widowed Eleanor Ferguson deeded her interest in the house to her brother, Charles and his wife, Mary. Five years later, after Mary herself had been widowed, Mary McLhinney conveyed this property to her grandson, Steven D. Bowman, and his wife, Frances Bowman, of Perryville.
For about 10 years between 2010 and 2020, this property at the southwest corner of Freedom Lane and Green Street did not appear to be lived in. However, in summer 2020 the owners sold it to Allen J. Fair, who is in the real estate business and has renovated several historical homes in Havre de Grace. He completely renovated this brick colonial home with inlay hardwood floors, a new kitchen with stainless steel appliances, and new bathrooms and in January 2022 Allen Fair sold this property to Shane M. and Sherry Gagne.
