116 North Union Avenue, c. 1810, demolished

This house had been owned by Dr. Richard H. Leithiser (1877-1963) and Rebecca Eleanora Leithiser (1879-1957), as well as their son Eldon Leithiser (1904-1990), at least during the first half of the 20th century. Eldon owned and ran Leithiser’s Men’s Store on Franklin Street for about 50 years and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. In 1944 Eldon Leithiser also was the scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 337 of Havre de Grace and had a section in his shop that sold boy scout uniforms and merchandise. Dr. Richard H. Leithiser was on the Board of Harford Memorial Hospital.
The Leitheiser house was acquired by St. John’s Church during the 1950s. It then became the home of The Rev. Bernard A Jennings and his family (including his son, Craig Jennings) around 1960 when The Reverend became the Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church and later became the founder of St. John's Towers on Congress Avenue. Craig Jennings recalls that the home was demolished in the mid-1960s to make room for a new rectory. Craig recalls living there and moving to another home rented by the church while the new rectory was being built.
One charming recollection of Craig about this house was its doorbell! In the front entryway as seen in the photo there was a doorknob on the right side which when pulled was attached to a string or something similar that connected to a metal bell that would ring the bell to let people inside know someone was at the door.
On the north side of this home, where the large Havre de Grace Library now stands, was the now-demolished Weber House at 118-120 North Union Avenue, which existed years before a library was built.
