225 St. John Street, demolished; rebuilt 1985

There used to be a large building in this location that was owned by Edward V. Stockham, Inc. (of the Seneca Cannery) from 1924 until 1956 when they sold it to Bayou Realty. The latter was owned by Joseph D. Silverstein (1909-1981) of Joseph’s Department Store so this was probably an investment property.
A photo is included here that shows a captured small Japanese submarine in front of the house. The submarine was ordered to enter Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and attack American warships with torpedoes; however, before it could enter Pearl Harbor it was grounded and captured by the Americans. It was then brought to the United States and towed by trailer around the country into communities to encourage people to buy war bonds and stamps. The purchase of a war bond or stamp entitled the person to look inside the vessel, which only required a two-person crew.
Another photo shows the same home on fire in the 1950s, after which Earl Blansfield said his great-grandparents, Hughey Blansfield (1875-1959) and his wife Ella, had to move out while repairs were made. It was owned at that time by C. Curtis Morgan, an oil products distributor in Aberdeen, who rented it to the Blansfields.
In 1960, Curtis Morgan rented the property to the Hayes Sinclair Service Station, which is shown on the 1955 Sanborn Insurance Map as a “Filling Station.” The property was bought in 1985 by Garfield H. Caudill (1909-2003) of Bel Air and Alan Getz, an attorney of the Harford County Treasury Department who demolished the existing building and constructed a new one for The Commercial Bank.
In 2004 Alan Getz sold the building to N & J Properties, LLC for the Havre de Grace Chiropractic Center.
