426 South Washington Street, c. 1873
The land on which this double house was built was owned by John T. and Louisa Moore in 1868 when they sold it to Patrick Hollihan and Ellen Hollihan (sometimes spelled Hollahan). That same year Patrick and Ellen sold the north part of what they bought to William Hollihan (1842-1890) and his wife, Julia (1840-1886), and in 1873 they sold the south part to William and Julia also. It is believed that William constructed this double house for his family soon after acquiring the second piece of the land. With double houses many people lived in one half and rented the other half, which William and Julia may have done. A double house appears at this location on the 1899 Sanborn Insurance Map. Another double house very similar in design and construction exists at 614 South Washington Street, built about 1870.
Julia died at 46 years of age and four years later William died intestate at 48 years in 1890, leaving six children, to whom both sides of the property descended. One of the heirs was Mary E. Fahey, wife of James H. Fahey (1862-1931), an attorney who also owned the Hotel Fahey on North Washington Street. Through the Faheys in 1922, the heirs conveyed the property to one of their siblings, Katherine J. Hollahan (1877-1950). It is known that Katherine Hollahan rented this south side of the home at least for some of the time she owned it because Norval Carr (1888-1948) and his wife, Agnes, and family lived here in 1935. Norval had served in WWI as a Wagoneer in the 71st Infantry 11th Division. In 1935, the Carrs’ infant son was walking from this house to that of a neighbor when he was struck and killed by a passing motorist. The accident resulted in litigation.
Katherine Hollahan continued to own both sides of this property until 1949, when she sold it to Omer L. Carson and G. Arnold Pfaffenbach, two local attorneys who were in the real estate business. They then sold the north and south sides of this double house separately.
In 1952, Sarah Creswell (1904-1976) bought this south side of the double home. She had owned the home for 24 years when she died in 1976, leaving it to her four children. They sold it in 1978 to Gary L. Burns and James and Margaret McFadden. Gary Burns was a history teacher in Rising Sun High School. In 1991 this was bought by Michael J. and Lisa Renee Tucker, after which mortgage attorneys sold the property at public sale to Kevin M. and Clara M. Gress in 1996.
Dolores Wagner bought this home in 1997 and still owns this property, after changing her name to Dolores A. Branning in 2006.
