810 South Union Avenue, c. 1933

This lot is part of a 1¼-acre parcel of land on the west side of South Union Avenue that was owned by Mrs. Sarah Hale in the early 19th century who bequeathed it to her granddaughter, Sarah Ann Brooke (1807-1890) and her husband, James W. Brooke (1798-1870). The Brookes sold it in 1843 to William F. Bayless (1814-1873). Upon the death of William, he bequeathed the land to his son, Samuel Martin Bayless (1847-1923).
In 1900, Samuel Bayless sold the land to local banker and investor, A. Hamlin Carver (1857-1943). The widowed Carver, who lived elsewhere in town, sold this Lot 472 in 1933 to Jesse Pusey (1896-1975). Jesse was the son of Clarence and Mattie Pusey of the C.C. Pusey Company on North Union Avenue and was a WWI veteran. Deeds unfortunately did not indicate whether a house existed on this lot when Carver sold it in 1933. However, because this is one of three similar traditional American foursquare style brick homes built in a row, and Carver was a banker and investor, it seems probable that the three houses were constructed by Carver prior to selling each of them.
Jesse Pusey sold the home in 1938 to William T. Hollahan and Maude Hollahan who made their home here for several years until William Hollahan died in 1966. Maude Hollahan’s attorney then sold the home to Edward J. Hutchins, Sr. (1922-2012) and his wife, Blanche Hutchins. Edward was WWII veteran and a local businessman who established several nearby locations of his dry cleaning business. He also served as President of the Little League and played a major role in the construction of the Havre de Grace Community Center on Lagaret Lane. A long-time resident of Havre de Grace, Edward was named Citizen of the Year in 1970. Having lived in this home for about 40 years, the Hutchins sold it to Stephen Scott Sheppard and Nancy A. Bates, his mother, in 2006.
Steve Sheppard is well known in town for owning the Office Centre on North Union Avenue. Over time, he made several upgrades to the home while maintaining its original charm. He refinished much of the woodwork, along with the floors, remodeled the kitchen in 2008, built a large detached 3-car garage in 2009, and remodeled the basement in 2010.
In 2016, the home was sold by substitute trustees in a public sale and was purchased by Allen J. Fair, a local realtor, who sold it in 2017 to 327 Scott, LLC, of Darlington, MD.
