They were the parents of Herbert Charles McCommons (1925-2005) and Sheridan R. McCommons (1928-2007). Sgt Herbert McCommons died in Havre de Grace in 1943, and was laid to rest at Deer Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The Harford County Historical Society is in the process of transcribing a diary kept by Sgt. McCommons from 1931 to 1943, when he died. A very close friend of his and featured in the diary, was A. Herbert “Herb” Gilbert (1869-1936), who lived on Bourbon Street. Herb Gilbert died of lung cancer at the Perry Point Veterans Hospital in 1936, which was a great loss to Sgt. McCommons, as described in the diary. Herb Gilbert was the father of J. Lawson Gilbert who owned Gulf Oil on Water Street.
This house was originally owned by the Burns Brothers (of the Carriage Factory on Green Street) who sold it to Nannie McCommons in 1919. After her death in 1928, Charles E. McCommons continued living in this home with their three children. The house was sold in 1949 to the Unruh family. There was a shoot-out at this home in July 1953 involving several police officers after which a man was reported to have died at the hospital.
The original home was completely demolished and a new house was constructed by Habitat for Humanity in 2016 and sold to Michele Robinson who works in the medical field.
