419 South Washington Street, rebuilt 1958

Quirk family members were involved in ownership of this property as well as next door at 417 South Washington Street in the early 1900s. Michael H. Quirk and his wife sold the home here to Margaret Quirk, Michael’s mother, in 1902. She was also the mother of Mary Fahey (nee Quirk), Margaret Pohl (nee Quirk), and Julia Quirk.
There was an ownership dispute in 1932 between James and Agnes Quirk and Mary E. Nolan; trustees of the Circuit Court resolved it by selling the property to Anna M. Haggerty (1889-1972). Anna Haggerty had been widowed by the time of the 1940 Census but continued to own this property until 1954 when she sold it to Alfred Bucchi (1928-2006) and Edna Elizabeth “Betty” Bucchi. Alfred was the son of Evaristo Bucchi (1889-1956) and his wife, Elisa Trincia Bucchi, who owned and operated a shoe repair shop on North Washington Street from around 1929 to 1956 when Evaristo died.
Deeds for Havre de Grace properties usually describe the location of a parcel of land without indicating whether there was a building on it (although the standard clause “with improvements” was usually included). Therefore it is not possible to determine when a buyer demolishes an existing building and replaces it with another so as to find an accurate “built date.” In this case the house does not appear to have been built in 1902 and is more likely to match the 1958 “built date” that is actually in county records. Therefore, it seems possible that Alfred and Edna Bucchi purchased an older building in 1954 and by 1958 replaced it with this brick one-story ranch-style house by 1958. Alfred and Edna lived in this house until 1993 when they sold it.
The new owner of this property in 1993 was Keith Beckley, who works at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, and he continues to live here with his wife, Nancy R. Beckley.
