311 North Stokes Street, c. 1899, demolished
This very narrow lot used to have a house on it but is now an open alley that is owned by 563 Green Street. A small piece of the former house can be seen in the photos.
From examining Sanborn Insurance Maps, it appears that there used to be a “shed” in this location in 1894 but by 1899 a “dwelling” appears here. The property was a portion of the lot formerly owned by the Charshee family at 567 Green Street and was willed by Catherine V. Charshee to Kate V. Miller, her daughter, in 1919. It was then sold by Winnie Burns (Kate’s sister) to C. Elwood Deckman (1881-1945) and Tenil I. Deckman in 1944. J. Frank and Bessie Mitchell appear to have owned it for just a year beginning in 1945 and Martha M. Steltz owned it from 1945-1948. The latter three people may have been related because their names also appear on deeds for 728 Fountain Street over a span of several years. The houses on Fountain Street had originally been built for workers at the Gambrill Textile Mill and factory at 701 Fountain Street.
This property with the house changed ownership several more times. However, by 1977 the house had been demolished; when the Maryland Historic Trust prepared an Inventory of Historic Properties and wrote a description of the 567 Green Street property, it described this property as an “alley” (see
https://mht.maryland.gov/secure/medusa/PDF/Harford/HA-1154.pdf). The lot or alley had further owners until 1999 when it was purchased by Neldon M. Jarvis, who also owned 563 Green Street. Jarvis sold both in 2007 to C O Falter Construction Corporation and in 2012 this alley to the rear of their property was purchased by Roger and JoAnn Teel with 563 Green Street.
