800 Conesteo Street, c. 1899
This home, in view of the Susquehanna River, was originally built prior to 1899 because the dwelling appears on the 1899 Sanborn Insurance Map. In 1932 Mary K. Abbott sold it to Rose Wolfinger, whose heirs sold it in 1937 to Gerardo and Pierina Gatto.
The north end of Havre de Grace in that era was fondly called Little Italy and was rich with names such as Leonardi, Tarquini, Cianelli, Lanquis, DiMauro, Reginaldi, Leodore, and Vincenti. The Gattos had been born in Italy and made their home here where they raised their five children. Their name became well known in town for their family-operated Gatto Chevrolet Sales on North Juniata Street at Superior Street (later known as Wilhelm Automotive).
The Gattos sold this home in 1944 to James Earl Walker (1896-1976) and his wife Dorothy (1905-1945). Dorothy died a year after they bought this house and Earl later married Lucy Walker. Together they sold the house to Robert and Frances Walker in 1953. In the late 1960s this became home to Jack and Claudia Donaldson their eleven children. Jack served in the US Army and then worked for more than 30 years at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. Several of their children also served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The home stayed in the names of Donaldson family members for several years. In 2016 Monica Rogers purchased the home and completely renovated it. She then sold it to John and Deborah Bangs in 2017, who are associated with Bangs Properties, a Property Management Company that owns several Havre de Grace properties. One year later, the Bangs sold this home to William “Bill” and Mary Klunk, the current owners. Bill was raised in Havre de Grace, the son of the late Paul “Spike” Klunk and Annabelle Klunk who were married for 64 years.
The location of the home is very historic, being adjacent to the former Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal and the restored Lockhouse, which was built in 1840, with a view of the Susquehanna River. After the Canal ceased operating in 1900, the Lockhouse became rental property until opened as The Susquehanna Museum of Havre de Grace at the Lock House, which is listed on the Register of National Historic Places. This home is now a rental property, managed by the owners, Bill and Mary Klunk of AMC Properties, Inc.
