310 North Stokes Street, c. 1910
In 1910 there was a house here belonging to Martin F. Abbott (1856-1926) and Catharine “Kate” Abbott, who had 10 children. In 1917, one of their sons, Morris L. Abbott was inducted for WWI and received assignment to Camp Meade in 1918 along with several other Harford County men. They were assigned to the 313th Infantry and in six weeks were assigned overseas duty—they became part of Company G 313th Infantry of the 79th Division. Having been promoted, Corporal Abbott served months of defensive and offensive warfare and died at Fleury in December 1918, at 24 years old. He is listed on the War Memorial in Tydings Park.
Because this home appears on the 1910 Sanborn Insurance Map, but not on the 1904 Sanborn Map, this home was likely built between those years.
In 1931, Lee I. and Miriam D. Hecht owned this property. Lee Hecht was the son of Isaac and Elizabeth Hecht, who built the Hecht Hotel at Green and North Adams Streets, and the Hecht sons were attorneys, businessmen, and investors. They bought this property from Harry Strauss of Baltimore, one of their business associates. Lee Hecht and his wife owned this home until 1947, most likely as an investment property. Lee Hecht served as Judge of the Appeal Tax Court in Baltimore from 1923 to 1943.
There were several owners of the home after that including Harry and Stella Neidlein in the late 1940s, Robert and Clarissia Lloyd in the early 1950s, and Bruce J. and Dianne Kelley in the 1960s to 1970s. Dianne Kelley worked for several years at Constar Plastic in Havre de Grace, after which the family moved to Port Deposit. Her husband, Bruce, who was a cabinet maker, died in 2019, just three years after his wife. In 1977, Ronnie D. Romine and Bernice May bought this home. Ronnie’s parents, born in Havre de Grace, were Howard and Nancy Romine.
After living here for 10 years, Ronnie and Bernice sold this house to Stephen Tebin and Michael Tebin in 1987. Stephen and Michael’s mother, Agnes Tebin, was known to Havre de Gracians for her years of work at L & H Cleaners on North Union Avenue and also for being inducted into the Havre de Grace Little League Hall of Fame in 2001. This property most likely was an investment property for Stephen and Michael. Having owned the property for about 20 years, the Tebins completely remodeled the home, installed new carpeting and kitchen, and built new front and side porches along with a large shed. In 2019 they sold this renovated home to James F. McCann, Jr.
