131 South Union Avenue, Medical Arts Building, c. 1963

The property on which this medical building was constructed used to be the front garden of the house now behind it at 449 Bourbon Street. The land extended from Union Avenue to Lodge Alley.
In 1961, Daisy Trout, the widow of Leonard E. Trout, sold the property, including the Bourbon Street house, to Dr. Gunther D. Hirsch and his wife, Poldi Hirsch (1926-1987). Poldi Hirsch was an architect who designed several buildings in Havre de Grace and her husband was a local obstetrician-gynecologist.
After the Hirsches subdivided the land, Poldi Hirsch designed a one-story building for her husband’s medical practice, which allowed the interior space to be easily divided for multiple uses. An exercise room and sauna were installed on the lower level (or basement) in the Health Fitness Institute. Poldi designed the building so that changes or renovations could be easily made. This flexibility in design allowed her to add a second floor to the building in 1980 to accommodate professional offices for her three daughters also. During the 1970s a boundary dispute arose between the Hirsches and Mary Clark Lambert who owned the property adjoining the medical office building on Union Avenue. Following much litigation the parties came to an agreement in 1979 and the new boundary line was moved to within 8 inches of the side of the medical building.
In 2013, Hirsch Trustees sold this building to Bangs Properties, LLC, and it continues to be used as professional rental offices.
