120 North Union Avenue, c. 1987; rebuilt 2016
Two homes that used to exist on this corner of North Union and Congress Avenues were demolished (see #116-118 and #126 North Union Avenue). One was to make room for a rectory for St. John’s Church and the second to make room for the new 1987 Havre de Grace Library. The 8,520 square foot brick library building (designed by Frederick Ward Associates, Inc.) served the community well but local population increases outgrew the library quickly.
In 2003, the building was renovated again to accommodate ADA mandates as well as to have an interior spruce up.
In October 2014 the existing library was demolished completely and a new library built of brick was created by Manns Woodward Studios. In June 2016, the new 21,164 square-foot Library opened and on July 14, 2016, Freemasons conducted a ceremony and placed a copper time capsule in the cornerstone. Now, more than 500 patrons walk through the Library doors each day to browse fiction, nonfiction, DVD, and audiobook collections, as well as use the computers for business, gaming, and social networking. And the information desk fields approximately 3,425 information questions a month.
