224 North Stokes Street, c. 1885
The land on which this house was built was owned by Francis A. Carr (1841-1920) who sold this lot in 1885 to Victor Jackson (1851-1925) of Principio Furnace in Cecil County. Victor and Mary Jackson had married in 1875 and subsequently moved to Havre de Grace, where Mary’s sister, Mrs. Oliver R. Currier lived. It is assumed that the Jacksons built this home during or shortly after 1885 and lived here until 1907, when they sold it to a local attorney.
In 1910, Winifred Hand purchased this home and lived here with her husband, W. James Hand, until her death in 1931. By her Will, she left the home to her husband, and then to her surviving children. After his death in 1936, it was owned by the children and in 1947 those surviving heirs sold the home to Joseph and Evelyn Brann. After three years, the Branns sold the home to George Blansfield (1898-1973) and his wife, Mildred Blansfield (1904-1985). George was a WWI veteran and they had two daughters who, no doubt, were grown by then.
The widowed Mildred Blansfield sold the house to Robert and Marie Waldon in 1975. Marie had worked for many years for the Bata Shoe Company and she and Robert were both avid sports fans. After Robert died in 2004, Marie continued to live here and from her screened front porch enjoyed watching the red rose bushes that grew in front of her house. Many people recognized her home by the rose bushes that were so prolific that they grew across the sidewalk.
Marie Faith Waldon died in 2018 and the colonial home was sold to a company that completely renovated both the interior and exterior. The pruned rose bushes remain and the property was bought by Adam and Amber Hilton in 2019. They, however, lived here only a short time and sold the home in January 2021 to Anthony D. Parks, Jr.
