112 South Union Avenue, Correri House, c. 1868
This lot was bought by Mary A. Wilson (1825-1906) in 1868 from Julianna Hall and others and was adjacent to a house owned and occupied by Captain John S. Wilson (1821-1892) since 1858. The deed she executed contained a curious covenant—that “if she should build a dwelling house on said premises there shall be no windows in the same facing toward the north.” It is not known whether the windows currently on the north side of the house were added later or if she disregarded the condition of sale. It would appear that she had this house built shortly after she acquired the lot. Another curiosity in the history is that records show that Mary Wilson was the wife of Captain John S. Wilson (but perhaps they were neighbors first!).
A succession of Wilson family members then owned this home for more than 100 years. Captain John and Mary Wilson’s son was Charles T. Wilson (1848-1921) who married Cyrena Bateman Wilson. Charles was a teacher at the Havre de Grace High School in 1873 and served as Mayor from 1907 to 1909. At his death in 1921, Charles bequeathed this home to Cyrena. In 1936, shortly before she died, Cyrena she sold the home to Josephine S. Wilson (1880-1963), her daughter, who like her father had become a teacher. Having lived here for almost 20 years, Josephine Wilson sold it with sundry articles and furnishings to Anna Lee Wilson. That same year, Anna L. Wilson (who was single) sold the house to Charles W. Wilson and Josephine S. Wilson (1880-1968).
By 1970, this was owned by Charles W. Wilson and Helena D. Wilson (1918-1985), his wife, who sold the home to Joseph James Correri (1934-2014) and Virginia Lucile Correri, his wife. The Correris were both Korean War veterans who worked at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. The wider Correri family was well-known for operating Correri’s Produce Market in town for many years. Its last location, on North Washington Street, was begun by Joseph Correri’s parents, Joseph and Margaret Correri, and then owned and run by Joseph’s brother, John Paul Correri and his wife, Catherine. Joseph James Correri died in August 2014 at the age of 80, having been married for 53 years to Virginia Lucile. She died only two years later.
This house is now owned by their son, Joseph James Correri, Jr.
