320 South Union Avenue, c. 1902
The land from the corner of Girard Street and running north on Union Avenue to this property was owned by different people at the turn of the century (some of whom were Susanna B. Jones, Arthur Vanneman, Stephen Seneca, and Michael Quirk). They conveyed some of their land to D. Craig Jones (1881-1907) in 1902 and this piece of land to Myrtle K. Jones (1864-1952) that same year. Myrtle Jones was the wife of Clinton M. Jones (1868-1930) and together they owned the four double houses or duplexes in this block on this western side of Union Avenue for varying periods of time.
This double house (320-322) and that known as 324-326 are very similar in design and most likely were built by Myrtle and Clinton Jones in 1902 when they acquired the land. The other two duplexes are older, with 316-318 estimated to date to the 1860s. Myrtle Jones sold all of her properties in 1940, about 10 years after Clinton’s death.
It is not known which of these properties was home to Clinton and Myrtle Jones but it is known that a “Mrs. A.L. Kennedy” resided in #320 (this north side of this duplex) in 1916. While county records do contain the names of property owners, they don’t contain names of tenants in the case of investment properties.
Deeds show that Myrtle Jones sold both sides of this double house to Emil A. Rochet (1912-1992) and his wife, Helen, in 1940. Emil was involved with the Lions Club, serving as treasurer in 1944. Five years later, the Rochets sold this northerly side of the duplex to Frank Perugino, Sr. (1908-1984) and his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Perugino. At the time of the 1940 Census, Betty’s sister, Edith Fisch, was living with them. Frank Perugino Sr. was sworn in as an Auxiliary Police Officer in Havre de Grace in the late 1940s. After Frank died in 1984, Betty Perugino sold this home to Deborah Ann Gilmartin who continues to make this her home.
