141 North Washington Street, Ada Asher
Building, c. 1880s
This first floor used to be Chesapeake Finance, which offered “Cash with speed for every need,” in the 1940s, followed by Midland Finance Company. In 1955, this was the location of Z. Witt, Jeweler, for whom Stanley M. Keen and Evelyn Murray worked at different times. Z. Witt moved his jewelry store a few years later to the Masonic Building at 213 North Washington Street.
Ada May Keen Asher (1897-1982), owner of this building in 1977, was the mother of Arthur Donald Asher who owned and operated the Greenleaf Supply paint store at 102 North Washington Street.
During 1983-1992, this was the location of Riverside Antiques, run by Pat Chaplin. They sold a variety of antique furniture, glassware and china. Another store, Midnight Sun, was operated here by Stefania Ervin in 1983 which featured Icelandic imports (they later moved to 118 North Washington Street). Sometime after that, George’s Antique Store, the Tattered Barn, Tasteful Touches, Treasures by the Bay (with Sheila Stauffer and Tammy Parrott offering chocolates and candy), and the HdG Sports Store successively moved into the bottom level. However, in 2017, HdG Sports Store vacated and this is now the Found Vintage Store.
358 Pennington Avenue, on the north side of this building, became part of this property. Please see the 358 Pennington Avenue entry for some colorful history of that location, especially during the gambling era of The Graw racetrack between 1912 and 1950. Note that the MIHP Inventory in 1977 pertains only to 141 North Washington Street on the corner of Pennington Avenue and North Washington Street.
In 2015 Frank Talmo LLC sold these properties to Eriter LLC of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
