323 North Union Avenue, c. 1910
This home was most likely built in 1910 by Andrew Lincoln Lyon (1866-1942) after his siblings deeded the land to him and Sarah “Sally” Lyon, his wife; it adjoins the original house next door at #321 that had been owned by George Taylor Lyon since 1866. Andrew and Sally’s son, George Taylor “Tad” Lyon, in a 1981 Harford County Living History Interview, recalls living in the “double house” with Millard Tydings next door.
Dr. Frederick W. Steiner (1878-1943), Dean of Staff at the Harford County Memorial Hospital of Havre de Grace had his medical office here from 1910 through the 1943. He also was the Havre de Grace District Health Officer for Harford County for several years, including when the first case of smallpox was diagnosed in 1922. The Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol 78, No.17, 1922, reported that the deceased patient was in the Havre de Grace Hospital and three other patients who had come in contact with the patient had also been diagnosed. The Hospital was put on quarantine.
The Daily Mail
from Hagerstown reported in November 1943 that Dr. Steiner was killed when his auto struck a tree in Perry Point. He was 65 and had been a practicing physician for 35 years. His wife, Grace E. Steiner, was seriously injured in the accident but survived. She continued to live in this house until she passed away in 1974, when her estate sold it to Thomas H. and Patricia H. Oliver. Thomas H. Oliver sold this in 2001 to Michael G. Chessick and Sandra K. Chessick but within two years they sold this to Anthony Saenz. Anthony and his wife were subsequently divorced and Anthony deeded this to Margaret Saenz in 2005, now known as Margaret Taft. This building shares a roof with the adjoining 321 North Union Avenue.
