130-134 North Washington Street
Correri Building, c. 1840
#130: On the south side of the building in the 1940s, next to Correri’s, The Ladies Shop was here and in 1992 it was the home of Joel’s Antiques & Refinishing. Later it became The Needlecraft Center.
#134: This address was the first location of Pohl’s Bakery in 1907 and is also listed as the residence of Lambert C. Pohl (1879-1926) in 1916. Lambert had immigrated from Germany in 1902 and married Margaret (Quirk) Pohl. In 1918, Lambert and Margaret Pohl moved their bakery to a renovated Hotel Fahey at 234 North Washington Street (the current location of Goll’s Bakery).
John P. Correri Sr.’s father was Joseph J. Correri, Sr. (1890-1952), who married Margaret Correri in the former Colonial Hotel on Union Avenue and opened their fruit and vegetable business here. They had begun the business in the 1890s, first at a riverfront stand and then in 301 St. John Street before opening their produce store here. Joseph Correri also was a Grand Knight of the Havre de Grace Council of the Knights of Columbus.
John P. Correri, Sr. (1922-1999), and his wife, Catherine, operated Correri’s Produce Market here under a landmark Pepsi sign affixed to the building. Catherine is said to have enjoyed making fruit baskets and working at the store. The Correri family lived above the market, where there were dual apartments. John was a WWII veteran and a member of the Susquehanna Hose Company.
Aaron Jack Graham worked at Correri’s Market and said they were great people to work for, with only the “freshest fruits and vegetables.” Fred Cullum recalls that J. Paul Correri, Sr. and four others played Pitch with him every Friday evening in 1969 at the #3 Firehouse—and always brought a bag of fresh roasted peanuts. An original brick wall can still be seen inside on the ground floor of this building.
In 1992, Lynn Gatchell Lang, having been a stylist since 1976, turned both of these retail spaces into her hair salon called “The Crazy Eights.” She celebrated the shop’s 25th Anniversary in 2017 and in 2020 the whole building was freshly painted.
