612-614 Franklin Street, c. 1876

In 1885, Lot 83 of this property, with the building on the lot, was purchased by Pierson D. Klair (1845-1912) and his wife, Vesta B. Klair. They were the parents of Howard O., Louis H., Jesse B., Hiram, and Margaret Klair (1874-1941). Margaret Klair subsequently became Margaret “Maggie” A. Sanders, the wife of William M. Sanders (1878-1917) and bought the adjoining two lots (81 and 82) in 1904.
Vesta Klair predeceased her husband, so after the death of Pierson Klair in 1912 his heirs deeded Lot 83 and the building to Margaret Sanders, their sister, who then owned the three lots. It was on this property that Maggie Sanders’ husband, William Sanders, operated the Sanders Machine Shop and Repair Works for several years while they resided here. Maggie and William had a daughter in 1896 whom they named Vesta, after her grandmother.
After the death of both her parents, Vesta B. Sanders inherited this property and opened “Sander’s Florist” in the home, and advertised the business in the mid-1940s with “Say it with Flowers.” Vesta Sanders sold the property in 1965 to Allen J. and Delores Fair for whom it likely was an investment. Allen J. Fair is now married to Pat Fair and they now own Arts by the Bay Gallery on St. John Street. Allen is also a real estate broker with BCH Real Estate on Congress Avenue.
Owners during the 1970s were Roy and Sylvia Pierce-Ball, whose daughter Marlenea “Susie” Ball died unexpectedly in 2013. They sold the property to Soney James Ramey (1941-1988), US Army veteran, and Sally Ramey. After the early death of Soney Ramey, Sally remarried and became Sally L. Getsinger who moved to New Jersey. She sold this property in 2008 to Diana and George A. Angelucci, who grew up on Otsego Street in Havre de Grace. This home appears to be divided into rental apartments.
