322 Market Street, Bomboys Ice Cream,
c. 1945

In 1945 this property at the northwest corner of Girard and Market Streets was owned by J. Frank Mitchell, who also owned the small house on the north side of it at 322 Market Street. He sold this parcel of land to Ringgold and Annie Tildon in 1945. It has been said that the Tildons ran a dry-cleaning business in the corner building at #322. In 1976, the Tildons sold the corner property to Joseph C. Fair (1905-1997) and Olive R. Fair (1911-1989), who opened an ice cream shop in it. Their daughter, Sharon Fair, remembers with pleasure that her father allowed her to eat all the Hershey’s ice cream she wanted until he closed the shop about two years later.
In the spring of 1978, Barry and Jeanmarie Bomboy bought the corner building #322 and began Bomboy’s Homemade Candy in the building with lemon yellow and orange interior walls, while living in the apartment above it.
Barry and Jean Bomboy, having outgrown this original space, purchased the lot across Market Street (#329) in 2000 and built a large candy-making facility in it with a residence for them on the second floor. They renovated this original building, that was Tildon’s Cleaners, to become an ice cream store and in 2006 they bought the home beside it (#322) from Lillian E. and Thurl D. Tildon. They demolished the house and constructed an addition to their corner store that became an ice cream parlor.
In 2018, the Bomboys celebrated 40 years of business in Havre de Grace.
