226 South Washington Street, c. 1909
This building is at the northwest corner of South Washington and Fountain Streets. It most likely was built by Fred Lawder (1877-1948) and his wife, Grace, around 1909, when they bought the lot from John and Mary Kennedy. The Lawders are a well-known local family who have owned various properties and businesses in town over the past 100 years.
The Lawders sold the property in 1926 to Charles Drennen (1880-1944) and his wife, Mary Edith Drennen (1882-1976). Mary Edith was a daughter of James Holly (1855-1935) and granddaughter of John “Daddy” Holly (1818-1892) the famous local decoy makers. Charles was known as the owner of the Havre de Grace Barber Shop at 308 St. John Street from about 1930 until his death in 1944. They also owned this property from 1926 until the widowed Mary Edith Drennan sold it in 1959 to Malcolm and Elizabeth Langley.
It is known that at some point this building was converted into four one-bedroom rental units but the exact year that this was done is not known. It had some consecutive owners with some foreclosures and the quality of the exterior maintenance of the building has varied. B & B Enterprises LLC of Pennsylvania was the previous owner, managed by Brian Bangs, and the current owner is Adare LLC, also of Pennsylvania.
