519 Alliance Street, c. 1911
When this home on the northeast corner of Alliance Street and Freedom Lane was originally built, the property included all of Lot 228 in Square 240 of Hopper’s Map of Havre de Grace. It appears that around 1932 the family of Julia Ann Moses divided the property and sold that part of the lot on which 517 Alliance Street was subsequently built just east of this. After the death of Julia Ann Moses, these two homes passed down to her two daughters, Ione Shirley and Eva Durban and their families in 1932. About 10 years later, this home was sold to Hannah J. Hoke who subsequently married and became Hannah Turner; the home remained in the Turner family until 1964.
New owners in 1964 were Barbara T. Cromwell and Saundra Cromwell (sisters) both of whom subsequently got married. Barbara T. Cromwell married Vernard Cyril “Sonny” Hughes (1933-2009) and together they owned this home until the death of Barbara in 2001. She is buried in St. James United Cemetery. Saundra Cromwell married William Brunson and earned a Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1981.
Barbara and Saundra Cromwell were sisters of Thurl (Cromwell) Snell and Emil Elkins Cromwell of Havre de Grace (both of whom are educators), all of whom were children of Horace Cromwell (1914-1986) and his wife, Frances Cromwell. Horace Cromwell’s father was Abel Francis Cromwell who served as Principal of the Havre de Grace Colored School on Alliance Street in the 1920s. Thurl Snell and Emil Cromwell serve on the Board of the Havre de Grace Colored School Foundation Museum and Cultural Center at 555 Alliance Street.
In 1958, Barbara and Saundra Cromwell sold this property to Barbara and Sonny Hughes who had married and made their home here. After the death of Barbara (Cromwell) Hughes in 2001, her husband Sonny sold the property to his niece, Beverly Denise Hughes, reserving a life estate. Otter Point Group Properties, LLC, purchased this home in 2011, completely renovated it, and in 2018 sold it to William T. Wolfe.
